Litchi chinensis Sonn,one of tropical fruit endemic to China,has been popular both in domestic and international markets.In this paper,we investigated the current situation of litchi production in China and other countries.Combined with the present status of litchi production in Maoming province,we believed that it is necessary for local economic strength to study the technical development and preservation of litchi flesh in Maoming province.Our research group made a circumstantial survey and understanding of currently common-used technology on litchi storage and flesh preservation,and summarized the critical factors that constrain the preservation,storage and transportation of litchi.Based on enormous amount of literatures,we recommended innovative methods and countermeasures concerned over the planting characteristics and climate properties in Maoming province.In order to ascertain the development direction of litchi fresh preservation technology and provide basis for the establishment of technical standard system in Maoming,a series of study about litchi flesh preservation technology was also carried out.The main study results are as follows:1.The technology of litchi pulp preservation in Maoming was backward,which has become a significant bottleneck in the development of litchi industry in Maoming province.Our analysis and summary on the basis of investigation and publications showed that there were seven main problems precluding the development of litchi pulp preservation technology,i.e.,(1)Growers did not have a good consciousness for preservation of litchi;(2)There was no good litchi preservation facilities,in harvest season,a large number of litchis cannot be stored in preservation facilities in time;(3)The litchi industry in Maoming province is mainly operated by small and medium-sized enterprises.Their costs were too high to make good use of these facilities compared with big companies;(4)The currently common-used preservation technology was too backward.(5)Lack of effective packaging,even stored and transported without simple packaging;(6)The freshness of litchi pulp was greatly influenced by transportation conditions.(7)There was no establishment of standards system from picking,storage and transportation.2.The countermeasures and suggestions on the development of litchi pulp preservation technology in Maoming province are as following:(1)Strengthening the training of litchi farmers to promote their awareness of litchi pulp preservation and storage.(2)Accelerating the construction of modernized litchi storage facilities,to meet the demand of current and future development of litchi industry.(3)Establishing litchi information exchange platform on the internet.(4)Promoting advanced techniques for ameliorating preservation of litchi pulp.(5)Improving the level of packaging.(6)Improving methods and conditions of litchi transportation.(7)The local government should encourage and support the development of litchi industry,the storage,transportation and preservation system of litchi should be improved as well.
