Polishing pad plays an important role in the polishing system,which can be divided into polishing pad with abrasives and without abrasives.The fixed abrasive polishing pad is widely used and studied as the polishing pad has a good planarization effect and it is environmentally friendly and the abrasives are high-usage.And the fabrication techniques of fixed polishing pads include micro duplication,screen printing,UV light curing,heat curing,ice curing and sol-gel technique.The fixed abrasive polishing pads usually have complicated preparation processes.However,there are some problems such as fiber-breakage,poor adhesion with the binder and uneven distribution of the abrasives in the fixed abrasive polishing tools based on fiber materials due to the materials properties and consolidation style.So the life of the pads is short and its polishing effect is poor.Based on the excellent mechanical and physical chemistry properties of carbon nanotube fibers and diamond with advantages such as high hardness and high melting point,this paper is aiming at preparing a polishing pad by weaving carbon nanotube fibers which are fixed with diamond abrasives by bonding.Carbon nanotube fibers and diamond are used as substrate and abrasives for the polishing tool,the factors that affected the uniform distribution of diamond on the surface of carbon nanotube fibers were explored,three different heat treating methods(muffle furnace,vacuum atmosphere furnace and high frequency induction furnace)were studied and the corresponding experimental parameters were discussed,The polishing tool was prepared by the knitting method of cross-stitch and the performance was evaluated.The results show as follows.(1)The concentration of diamond solution and depositing time have the great effect on the number of diamond particles and uniformity of diamond distribution on the surface of the fiber.And an ideal result appears when the concentration of diamond is 0.5wt.% and the depositing time is 5 min with suitable ultrasound assisted.(2)Heat treatment with suitable temperature can improve the tensile strength of carbon nanotube fibers.Carbon nanotube fibers are bonded with diamond under the conditions of high temperature and short time,and the mechanical properties of the fiber become better obviously.The tensile strength of the fiber changes from 83.35 Mpa to 168.74 Mpa,increased by 102.4%.And there is no obvious graphitization of the diamond particles.(3)The polishing tool made of carbon nanotube fibers with fixed diamond processed agalmatolite compared with polishing tool made of pristine carbon nanotube fibers.The former has certain removal effect,and its wear resistance is better than the latter.
