Research On Huang Zongxian’s Mathematical Work

Huang Zongxian,whose another name is Yuping,was also known as Xiaogu.He was born in Xinhua county,Hunan province in the 1840 s and died in the early 20 th century.He was a famous mathematician at the end of the Qing dynasty.Huang Zongxian,Zeng Jihong and Zuo qian were students of Ding Quzhong.They often discussed mathematics together.As one of the earliest mathematicians who go to Europe,Huang Zongxian also combined western knowledge with traditional Chinese mathematics,and combined the practicality and theory of mathematics.These have been fully reflected in his mathematical works:Qiu Yi Shu Tong Jie(求一术通解),Rong Yuan Qi Shu(容圆七术),Qu Mian Rong Fang(曲面容方)and Lian Pao Yi Zhi(练炮宜知).Therefore,this artical conducts a research on these four mathematical works.There are two volumes of Qiu Yi Shu Tong Jie(求一术通解).The first volume is mainly the proof,improvement and application of Qin Jiushao’s"Da Yan Zong Shu Shu(大衍总数术)".The"Fan Cheng Lv(反乘率)"and"Xi Gen Fa(析根法)"make the"Da Yan Zong Shu Shu(大衍总数术)"more complete.The method of"Bai Ji Wen Ti(百鸡问题)"was improved by using"Da Yan Zong Shu Shu(大衍总数术)".The second volume is mainly about the improvement of the algorithm of"Da Yan Zong Shu Shu(大衍总数术)"and the research of"Fan Cheng Lv Xin Shu(反乘率新术)",which reflects the algorithmic tendency of Huang’s method.There are three volumes of Rong Yuan Qi Shu(容圆七术).The first two volumes introduce the algebraic solution to the topic of"triangle contained a circle",and the third volume introduces Huang Zongxian’s"Gui Hui Jie Fa(规绘捷法)".Huang gave the specific equation,but does not gave limit of tool.He payed more attention to the practicability of knowledge.Qu Mian Rong Fang(曲面容方)mainly introduce the algebraic solutions to the problem of"cone’s transversal contained a square".Huang Zongxian used western knowledge to solve Chinese mathematical problems and solved them by using the formula or the equations of"Dai Wei Ji Shi Ji(代微积拾级)".Lian Pao Yi Zhi(练炮宜知)is the explanation and supplement to Huo Qi Zhen Jue(火器真诀).Considering the acceptance ability of soldiers and actual combat situation,Huang Zongxian not only introduced the specific algorithm,but also introduced the influencing factors and the method of measuring the distance between enemy and us.Huang Zongxian paid attention to the practicality of knowledge,and is good at combining western knowledge with traditional Chinese knowledge.His research results are the inheritance and development of traditional Chinese mathematics.
