Shade tolerance of plants refers to the survival ability of plants in low light intensity environment. It is a series of adaptive changes that plants regulate their physiological characteristics, maintain their internal environment balance and normal growth and development under low light quantum density.Although the researchers have done a lot of systematic research on shade tolerance of plants, there are few researches on the combination of economic traits, hydraulic traits and anatomical traits with shade tolerance. In order to explore the relationship between shade tolerance and plant growth, survival and distribution, the individual plants in Quercus wutaishanica,a representative top plant community in the Loess Plateau, were taken as the research object. The shade tolerance and leaf characters of early dominant species, late dominant species and associated species in succession were compared by multiple comparison scores,in order to explore the relationship between shade tolerance and plant growth, survival and distribution The relationship between shade tolerance and leaf characters, the relationship between shade tolerance and individual development period, and the tolerance of plants to light, water and other environmental factors were explored. The relationship between leaf characters was clarified by correlation analysis, which provided scientific basis for the study of shade tolerance. The main results are as follows:1.The economic and hydraulic traits of the species with strong shade tolerance were significantly higher than those with weak shade tolerance, but there was no significant difference in anatomical traits.2.The economic and hydraulic traits of the species with strong shade tolerance increased significantly with the growth and maturity of plants, while those with weak shade tolerance increased significantly, but the hydraulic traits did not change significantly.3.For the Loess Plateau,we can use the economic and hydraulic traits of plants to characterize the shade tolerance of plants.
