The genus Meconopsis belongs to the tribe Papaveroideae of Papaveraceae distributed in the high altitude of the Himalaya and the Hengduan Mountains, southwest China. There are about 79 species in the world and 58 occurs in China. In this paper,we carried out cytolocial studies on 6 species. The results showed that M.horridula: 2n=56=2m+30sm+24st;M.integrifolia:2n=76=8m+34sm+34st;M.pseudointegrifolia:2n=76=36m+32sm+8st;M.racemosa:2n=56=8m+34sm+14st;M.rudis:2n=56=6m+34sm+16st;M.xiangchengensis:2n=56=4m+24sm+28st;of which three species M.xiangchengensis,M.rudis and M.seudointegrifolia were fistly studied.Meconopsis,is important genus in the Himalaya and the Hengduan Mountains, many studies have been carried out. However, the cytological studies of Meconopsis in this area are still very poor.Previous reports showed that there were only 18.99% of the genus are reported on chromosomes.Among them, there were only 4 species of Meconopsis reported in China, accounting for 6.9% of the total number of Meconopsis species in China. Then the karyotype evolution were discussed on the basis of the results of karyotype of Meconopsis.Secondly, the paper applied the flow cytometry to calculate the genome size of the plants of the genus Meconopsis. The results showed that the genome size of most species of Meconopsis species is about 4500-9000 Mbp.However, due to the large difference in the number and form of the plants of Meconopsis,it is not possible to determine the ploidy directly by flow cytometry. It is still necessary to combine the karyotype experiments to obtain accurate results. Finally,we matched the chromosomes data in the phylogenetic tree of the genus Meconopsis, analyzing the evolutionary tendency of cytology, the results indicated that the chromosome evolution of Meconopsis was preliminarily discussed. It is concluded that the number and ploidy of Meconopsis chromosomes may increase with the evolutionary process, and the increasing process may be a combination of euploidy and aneuploidy.
