Photonic crystal fiber is a new type of fiber.This fiber is formed usually by a single medium.The micro-structured cladding closely arranged in a fiber direction of the same wavelength of the order of air holes;Because of flexible designing for the cladding structure,it has a lot of excellent optical properties,such as endless single-mode guiding,high nonlinear,high birefringence,tailorable chromatic dispersion.The optical properties of PCF filled with functional materials can be control when the environment is changing.The novel optical devices based on PCF has a lot of advantages,such as simple structure,high sensitivity.Magnetic fluid is a novel nano-material,of which the optical characteristic changes with the applied magnetic field.It has solid magnetic characteristic and it is easy to fill as a liquid.The tunable photonic devices can be designed combining the PCF with MF.In this paper,the MF is filled into the air holes of photonic crystal fiber.The optical properties and filling characteristics are simulated using COMSOL,and the applications are also studied.The main results are summarized as follows.Firstly,We introduce the concept,research progresses,structural characteristics and unique optical properties of photonic crystal fibers.The theoretical process for photonic crystal fiber is analyzed in detail by the finite element method.We also introduce the optical properties of magnetic fluid.All provides the theoretical foundation for the next simulation.Secondly,the mode,loss and dispersion properties of circular-hole and elliptical-hole PCF are investigated;The mode and loss properties are analyzed after filled MF and the loss sensitivities between circular-hole and elliptical-hole PCF filled with MF are analyzed and compared.The effective mode refractive index,the effective area and loss of PCF increase after filled with MF;The loss sensitivity of elliptical-hole PCF filled MF is about three times more than that of circular-hole PCFFinally,analysis of characteristics of elliptica-hole photonic crystal fibers.Application on fiber sensing and fiber modulating are investigation on magnetic fluid infused photonic crystal fibers.On fiber sensing aspect,the sensing principle,system designing and temperature characteristics are studied;On fiber modulating aspect,modulation principle and modulation characteristics are investigated when it is designed as a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.The sensitivities are-0.279dB/? and 0.0346dB/Oe,respectively.
