Recently, the global warming has caused a series of problems.Especially, the issue of global sea level rise and the melting of polar ice sheet have attracted great attention. However, the elevatio n of polar ice sheets can not be monitored by traditional ground measurements. With the development of satellite remote sensing te chnology and the concept of satellite altimetry,we can use altitude satellites to monitor elevation changes of polar ice sheets to stud y the polar ice sheet changes and their impact on global sea level and global climate change. In this paper, the development of the altimetry satellite and the application of the altimetry technology in the polar ice cover are introduced. The measurement principle, the measurement mode, the data product and the application of the two ICESat and CryoSat-2 are introduced. The measurement errors and error corrections of the two altimeter satellites were analyzed.According to the change rate of the Antarctic ice sheet, based on GRACE satellite gravity data, the Amundsen region of the southwestern pole is selected as the study area. The concrete results are as follows:Firstly, using the ICESat laser satellite to study the elevation changes of the Amundsen regional.Using the ICESat satellite's GLA12 data from 2004 to 2008 and the cross-point method to research the elevation changes in the Amundsen area. The annual elevation variation and annual variation rate of the Amundsen region were studied. It was found that the most of the annual variation was more than-100cm,and the annual variation rate was(-1.40±15.17)cm·yr-1.Secondly,using the CryoSat-2 radar altimetry satellite to study the elevation changes of Amundsen regional.Using the GDR data of the satellite from 2011 to 2016 and repetitive orbit least-squares plane fitting method to research the elevation changes in the Amundsen area.Considering the data of CryoSat-2 is full-year data, the CryoSat-2 data were analyzed on a quarterly and annually basis to obtain the elevation changes of the Amundsen region, get the annual change rate of 1 Hz the elevation of the region was(-6.91 ± 20.57)cm · yr-1.Thirdly,analyzing the results of the two altimeter satellites,it is known that the ice sheet in the Amundsen area is ablation and the rate of ablation is increasing.
