Translation Strategies Of Long And Complex Sentences In EST Translation From The Perspective Of Functionalist Translation Theory

With the rapid development of science and technology,the exchange in scientific and technological information has grown rapidly,which has promoted the increasing advancement of EST(English for Science and Technology)and its translation.As a result,a load of countries have established a number of specialized research institutions for EST and the related professional courses,in order to meet the demands of readers at different levels for scientific and technological information.Considering the particular features of EST translation,such as long and complex sentences,technical terminology and passive voice,which differ from other types of English translation,translators need to grasp the corresponding translation strategies.This essay will review and summarize the previous researches on EST translation and long and complex sentences in EST translation.Moreover,it will give a comprehensive introduction to functionalist translation theory,especially the four representatives and their theories,namely,Katharina Reiss and text typology theory,Hans.J.Vermeer and Skopos theory,Holz-Manttari and translation action theory,and Christiane Nord and "function plus loyalty".Based on the functionalist translation theory and combined with translation practice and problems when translating long and complex sentences in EST articles,the essay will attempt to summarize and conclude four translation strategies aiming at long and complex sentences in EST translation,namely,linear translation,reverse translation,division and synthesized translation,in order to give a reference to translators when facing such sentences.
