GCL has the advantages of good flexibility, uneven settlement resistance,no aging reaction and simple construction,at present, researchers have done a lot of work on the permeability of GCL under defect conditions, after the analysis of the different damage of GCL permeability, these also provide many valuable experience to the research of this article; But there are few reports on the performance of root puncture.?Based on this, the performance of GCL and its interaction with plants were studied by model test. The results and conclusions are as follows:(1)The experiment of terrestrial model was carried out to measure the height and density of the terrestrial plant, and to study the effect of GCL laid under the root system on the growth of the plant. The results showed that the height and density of plants with GCL was higher than that of plants without GCL;(2)Conducted aquatic model test research and designed different aquatic planting plans,we have studied the height, density, and above ground and underground 20 cm biomass of water lilies, reeds, and cattail plants. The results showed that the plant height, density and underground biomass of GCL with GCL at the bottom of the test pool were higher than that of the plants without GCL.The ratio of root to shoot ratio of aquatic plants with GCL laid at the bottom was between 1.1 and 1.7 to that of non-laid GCL aquatic plants;(3)We have conducted the moisture content test, the free expansion index test and the test of the bentonite element test. The results of water content test showed that the moisture content of GCL was only 18.60% in natural state and the GCL moisture content in terrestrial plant soil for two years was about 3 times that of GCL in natural state. The maximum value was 58.37% and the water content of GCL in aquatic plant soil for two years was about 7 ~ 10 times of that of GCL in natural state. The maximum reaches 183.4%.The free expansion index of GCL bentonite buried in terrestrial or aquatic plant soil for two years was significantly lower than that of GCL in natural state. The results of bentonite element test showed that the content of Na2 O in GCL decreased obviously compared with that in natural state after two years of soil embedding and the content of Na2 O is about 1/3 of the GCL's natural state after the GCL is embedded in terrestrial soil for two years. Two years after the GCL is buried in aquatic plant soil, the content is about 1/4 of the GCL's natural state and there is no significant change in other oxide content;(4)The GCL permeation test was carried out to study the changes of permeability of GCL embedded in terrestrial soils and water in soils that were penetrated by roots and not penetrated by roots separately. The results showed that under different confining pressures, the penetration of terrestrial plants and aquatic plants increased the permeability coefficient of GCL and the maximum penetration of terrestrial plants under root penetration increased by two orders of magnitude. The penetration of roots of aquatic plants increased by an order of magnitude.Under the same confining pressure, the larger the root diameter, the greater the permeability coefficient.
