200 mM NaCl significantly promoted the vegetative and reproductive growth of Suaeda salsa.However,it is still unclear that the enhanced effect of NaCl is due to Na+or to Cl-or both of them.S.salsa seedlings were treated with Hoagland nutrient solution,200 mM NaCl+Hoagland,200 mM Na?composed of NaNO3,NaH2PO4 and Na2SO4?+Hoagland,200 mM Cl?composed of MgCl2,KCl,CaCl2 and NH4Cl?+Hoagland,respectively.Plant vegetative and reproductive growth parameters were studied,and the main results were showed as follows.1.The results showed that the plant height,fresh weight,dry weight and branch number of S.salsa were significantly promoted by NaCl and Na treatment,while inhibited by Cl treatment.The plant is short and yellow when treated with Cl.The results indicated that Na+was the main factor to promote the vegetative growth of S.salsa.2.Further experiments indicated that the content of chlorophyll,net photosynthetic rate,?PSII and Fv/Fm of S.salsa plants were also markedly increased when treated by NaCl and Na,but significantly decreased by Cl treatment.The results indicated that Na+was the main factor to promote the vegetative growth of S.salsa via improving the photosynthesis parameters.3.200 mM NaCl and Na treatment significantly increased the number of flowers and seeds of different branches and the whole plants,reduced the rate of single flower abortion.Cl salt treatment significantly increased the number of flowers of the whole plants compared with the control,however the number of the seeds did not significantly differ from the control.Therefore,the abortion rate of flowers markedly increased when cultivated with Cl.4.According to the obvious morphological changes of the male and female reproductive organs of S.salsa,the flowering process of S.salsa can be divided into five stages:budding,maturing,opening,pollination and wilting.The critical stages of pollination are maturing and pollination.The stigma and anther development of S.salsa under NaCl and Na treatments were almost normal in each process of flowering.However,under control and Cl treatment,there was a considerable proportion of stigma premature and aging?black hair before pollination?,anther failure?the anthers had single or multiple abnormal development?and anther dehiscence failure.These abnormal phenomena severely reduced the efficiency of fertilization.5.The contents of Na+and Cl-in the flowers of different treatments were analyzed.The content of Na+in the flowers of NaCl and Na salt treatment was significantly increased compared with the control,and the flowering and fruiting of the plants were normal.The content Cl-content in in flower organs markedly increased and far exceeded its normal content of growth needs,which might be one of the important reasons ofor the high rate of abortion when treated with Cl salt.
