Ground penetrating radar(GPR)is a kind of nondestructive detection technology.Antenna emitting high frequency electromagnetic wave to the underground and receiving it,due to the underground medium with different electromagnetic properties and physical properties, the path, intensity and waveform of the electromagnetic wave will change, and we can ascertain the property difference of the underground mass.Due to the advantages of convenient,non-destructive and fast data acquisition, ground penetrating radar has been widely applied in various fields, such as engineering construction, archaeological research, environmental monitoring, geological exploration, mineral exploration and unexploded detection. At present, the most commercial radars are single polarimetric radars. The single polarimetric radar can only obtain single polarimetric data that we can not effectively identify some important linear targets, such as cables,pipes,etc..Full polarization of GPR can receive electromagnetic wave from different polarimetric directions.According to the different information included in electromagnetic wave which the targets reflected and the relationship between vector characteristics of electromagnetic wave signal,we can better access to the target location and direction information etc..In addition, the polarimetric characteristics of the targets can be analyzed by the full polarimetric scattering matrices.Through analyzing the matrix,we can understand the polarimetric characteristics of the target at each measuring point. These polarimetric features include both the co-polarimetric information and the cross-polarimetric information. So that full polarization can obtain more comprehensive polarimetric information than the single polarization.Although the full polarimetric radar has been widely used in the field of microwave remote sensing,it is rarely used in GPR field.Different underground targets often have different scattering polarimetric characteristics. These targets are not easy to be identified by single polarimetric GPR,but they may be identified by full polarimetric GPR.In addition, most commercial radars can only get single polarimetric data,so it is very important to get the full polarimetric data by single polarimetric acquisition mode. This paper is mainly introduced from the following aspects:(1)The theoretical derivation of full polarimetric data based on the single polarimetric acquisition mode and the polarimetric decomposition technology of H-alpha which is widely used in the field of microwave remote sensing are introduced.(2)From the theory to lab experiment and field experiment,we can verify the correctness and feasibility of the single polarimetric acquisition mode to get the full polarimetric data.(1)The H and alpha values corresponding to the theoretical scattering matrix of three targets(ball, cylinder and dihedral)are calculated, and the two-dimensional feature space classification maps of the H-alpha theory are obtained.(2)The H and alpha values of each data point are calculated from the measured data sets of three targets(sphere, cylinder and dihedral),and the two-dimensional feature space classification maps of H-alpha data sets under laboratory environment are obtained.(3)The two-dimensional feature space classification maps of laboratory data are compared with that obtained by the theoretical scattering matrices, and the result has good consistency.(4)The full polarimetric data based on the single polarimetric acquisition mode is applied to the identification of the field drainage pipeline, and the drainage pipeline can be identified effectively.(3)Considering the polarimetric properties of multiple targets, they may interact with each other.Taking the pipeline as an example,we discuss the interaction of polarimetric attributes between targets.(1)In the case of mutual influence of the polarimetric properties of multiple pipes,we can extract the polarimetric properties of any pipeline target in multiple pipeline targets, and identify the underground pipeline by using full polarimetric data based on single polarimetric acquisition mode.(2)In the case of the polarimetric properties of the pipeline under the influence of other nonlinear targets, the polarimetric properties of pipeline target which are affected by other targets are extracted.During the course, using full polarimetric data based on single polarimetric acquisition mode,we can identify the underground pipeline effectively. In addition,we also discuss the interaction between the pipeline and the nonlinear targets qualitatively.
