With the developing of coherent optical transceiver,the key components of coherent optical system should have better performance in size,cost and power consumption,which give more pressure on most of the coherent optical communication system using in metropolitan area network.Nowadays,integrated tunable laser assembly(ITLA)has become one of the most important devices in the high speed,large capacity optical communication system.Particularly,in the long haul backbone network and metropolitan area network,most of the the constructing of optical network uses wavelength division multiplexing technology,which needs large amount of ITLAs and the technology is the hot spots of concern in the world.Based on the structure of silicon micro-ring,we proposed a novel kind of ITLA,of which the outer cavity consists of gain chip,silicon micro-ring waveguide chip and two lenses.We designed several methods to increase the stability of output wavelength and to realize mode locking.Finally,based on the packaging process and coupling & test method,we achieved ITLA device of good performance.The main innovative contents and technical contributions of this thesis are as follows:This thesis proposed a novel small form fact structure base on silicon waveguide chip to achieve high stability of the ITLA device and the coupling efficiency of the structure is calculated and analyzed.We designed a resonant cavity mode locking method and proposed a wavelength feedback adjusting system with excellent adjusting efficiency.We have done the packaging of ITLA based on silicon micro-ring.As a result,the lasers have shown a wide tunning range covering the C bands while the output power can reach 15 dBm with Side Mode Suppression Ratio(SMSR)of nearly 60 dB.
