The research problem of this dissertation focuses on the role of economic factors in the development of Sino-U.S.relations in the late 1960 s and early 1980 s and their impacts on the two countries.By the influence of ideology,China and the United States began to become hostile after World War II,The United States also began an economic blockade against China.Although in the Kennedy administration and the Johnson administration, the United States had brewed the relaxation of trade control policies toward China, these policies had not been introduced in the context of the Cold War.During this period, the economic factors in the relations between the two countries are completely subject to political factors, economic factors are only means to achieve political purposes. With the international political situation changing, the United States fell into the Vietnam War and its strength was relatively declining, and was full of domestic contradictions;the Soviet Union's military superiority gradually caught up with the United States;western Europe,Japan and other major powers were also pursuing their own political status. In order to improve its own disadvantage, the United States had taken steps to improve the relation with China. The Nixon administration began to relax economic and trade restrictions on China in the late 1960 s.With the continuous improvement of China's comprehensive strength and international status,The United States increasingly need to cooperate with China in the economic and security fields, therefore the economic factors were playing a more important role.Meanwhile,China broke through the ideological constraints to improve the relation with the United States due to its domestic constructions. As a result, the two sides had negotiated on the key issues of the economic factors like Claims and Assets,MFN treatment and other issues, and a trade agreement was signed after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, opening a new chapter in the normal development of economic and trade between the two countries. From the late 1960 s to the early 1980 s,economic factors were no longer subject to political factors, and more often played an equally important role with political factors. In the process of solving the problem of Claims and Assets and MFN treatment, the economic factors were not only catalysts but also purposes of improving the relations between the two countries. It can be said that economic factors in different periods had different impacts on two countries.By examining the impacts of economic factors on the relations between the two countries, this dissertation finds out how China and the United States can improve bilateral relations through the discussions of economic issues. This process is of great significance to promoting the healthy development of Sino-U.S.economic and trade relations, enhancing Sino-U.S.relations and peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
