The ancient mythology of Dayu's legendary flood control effort has been told for generations. The Dayu legend of floodwater management took place in Kyushu, and the central Chinese city of Wuhan is considered the historical site associated with the ancient legend.Wuhan which sits at the intersection of the Yangtze and Han rivers has been known as the "river town" for thousands of years. For millennia, Wuhan's rich historical and cultural heritage combined with its natural endowment have given the city unique characteristics, earning itself the reputation of being the heart of the strategic Yangtze and Han area. It has also enjoyed an unparalleled place in history for being the cradle of many heroes and prominent figures of historical significance. According to the legend,Dayu diverted the Han River from its original course into the Yangtze, the arrangement had gone into making what the city look like today. Wuhan has therefore become a sacred place for worshipping Dayu. Dayu's epic endeavor to take on the floods shares the city's vision of being a "pioneer in the pursuit of excellence".Given its geographical proximity to many rivers and lakes, Wuhan looks to brand itself as the beating heart of the Yangtze and Han area. It is of great importance to rediscover the meaning of the ancient legend and to re-examine Wuhan's water resources potential as the municipal government places its attention on the development of the strategic area. The Wuhan government has recently introduced the Thirteenth Five-year Plan on Land Use and Urban Planning against the backdrop of the state's "Road and Belt" initiative and its call to revitalize the Yangtze civilization. The burgeoning tourism industry helps open up new opportunities and avenues for the preservation of the cultural heritage of folk literature in which the Dayu legend remains a central part. This paper focuses on the mythology and folklore of Dayu's contribution of flood control, taking an in-depth look into how the legend of Dayu can play into local tourism. This paper also includes analysis of the legend of Dayu and its effect on the internal and external conditions surrounding the development of Wuhan before making a recommendation on how to incorporate folk literature elements into regional tourism scene. The author seeks to break away from the traditional concepts of landscape tourism and tourism route design and application by digging deeper into the cultural significance and extensional attributes of the Dayu's legend of managing floodwater. Using the theory of "regional tourism integration", this paper aims to explore ways in which cultural tourism resources made of folklore and local legends can apply into urban tourism development in hopes of forging new pathways for developing intangible cultural heritage tourism.
