China- ASEAN free trade area is the first and the largest free trade area established between China and foreign countries. Recently, China has become the largest trading partner of ASEAN, and ASEAN is the third largest trading partner of China. Manufactured products play an important role in bilateral trade. In order to promote the development of trade between China and ASEAN, it is necessary to analyze the relationship between China and ASEAN in the trade of manufactured products, identify the category of manufactured products that are highly competitive and highly potential between China and ASEAN, and the problems existing in the trade of manufactured products between China and ASEAN. Finally, I will make policy proposals to promote the trade of manufactured products between China and ASEAN.Firstly, this paper makes a comprehensive analysis on the basic situation in the trade of manufactured products between China and ASEAN. Then this paper analyzes the data of manufactured goods between China and 6 main ASEAN countries by using RCA index to identify the goods that the two sides have advantage and disadvantage respectively. Thirdly, this paper measures the competing situation of the trade in manufactured products between China and ASEAN by using STCIM index and STCI index. Finally, we identify the categories of manufactured goods with high trade potential between China and ASEAN, and put forward practical and feasible policy recommendations.Based on the analysis, this paper has the following findings:There are both intensive competition as well as complementary between China and ASEAN on the trade of manufactured products. Among the 6 ASEAN countries, Thailand has more varieties of Manufactures which have high trade potential with China, but Indonesia and Vietnam only have a few. Besides, the high trade potential products are mainly in capital and technology intensive products between China and Singapore or Malaysia. However, the high similarity of the industrial structure and the lack of competitiveness in the high-tech, high value-added products will restrict the further development of bilateral trade. Therefore, we must improve the technical level of manufactured products, and at the same time, we must strengthen bilateral cooperation in the trade of manufactured products.
