Along with the progress of globalization, the internationalization of Chinese market has a rapid development. The relationship between Chinese economy and the world economy is becoming therefore more and more closer. Compare with the world-class enterprises, which are also known as the first comer enterprises, the enterprises of the biggest developing country China have evident characteristics of latecomer firms and still have a long way to run after the former. The answers to the questions like “how to find a way to catch up with and surpass the first comer enterprises” and “how to improve the enterprise competence” are very important to the future development of Chinese latecomer firms.Firstly, this paper summarizes the existing relevant Chinese and foreign researches of latecomer firm, including the summary of concepts and theories and the collation of catch up and surpass strategy. The most important job of this part is to clarify the concept of latecomer firm competence. It is the theoretical foundation for the further study of this paper. Secondly, this paper discusses the catch up and surpass strategy of latecomer firm and his growth in enterprise competence specifically. The circuitous catch up and surpass strategy of latecomer firm, which means to start at the low-end market and go to the high-end market with enough enterprise competence, is the key to the theoretical framework of this paper. And then this paper asserts two claims to enterprise competence growth in the circuitous catch up and surpass strategy of latecomer firm: the growth of technical capacity and the growth of market ability. At the same time this paper draws a conclusion about the most important enterprise competences in the circuitous catch-up and surpass strategy through the case study on the businesses of Huawei smart phone and Sany excavator. These important enterprise competences are following: the capability of independent innovation, the capability of imitative innovation, the network capability, the resource mobilization capability and the capability of bring in high-quality talent in technical capacity, the capability of market research, customer relationship management, channel management, market positioning and product development in market ability. It confirms the feasibility of the circuitous catch-up and surpass strategy and there for suggest concrete direction and key points to improve the enterprise competence of latecomer firm.The results of this paper enriches the existing theory of catch-up and surpass in latecomer firm, and provides a new perspective for the future study. At the same time, the circuitous catch-up and surpass strategy also provides guidance and reference for many latecomer firms.
