Research On The Construction And Communication Of Workers' Image In People's Pictorial (1950-1955)

This paper focuses on "people's pictorial"(1950 to 1955),to analyze the construction and dissemination of new Chinese workers image through related photos and text contents.It aims to explore the news producing principle and aesthetic origins of "people's pictorial" as a national pictorial,and tries to analyze the propagation principle behind the production and implication of the study.It attempts to address three questions:what kind of workers image constructed by "people's pictorial",what is the image production construction mechanism,how the image played an exemplary role in that society.The article is divided into four parts:the first part contains macro data and specific cases analysis of 497 reports related workers image from 1950 to 1955,from the total 66 issues.They were divided into 3 kinds according to the content:the life of the workers,the domestic construction and patriotic production exercise.Among them,the domestic construction includes a special issue-workers and technological innovation.The workers' image of the historical context,the photography composition proportion,shooting angle,shooting performance object,atmosphere,title,theme selection,image layout,text and a series of content have been analyzed to conduct that 50s workers image features are intertwined with subjectivity and Modernity:domestically,the working class actively participated in national construction to fulfill their responsibilities and obligations;outside,they participated in production of patriotic movement to achieve the subjectivity;the working class has become the main force to realize national modernization and industrialization;the life of workers,reflected the facts that the working class have changed to the masters of the country;and the innovation of the mode of life and the state of the collective life of socialism revealed modernity.The second part mainly discusses the modes of workers' image production,using"Photographing Work" as a preliminary snooping entrance.The modes of production are summarized in the following aspects:based on the concept of News reported by the Soviet Union;guided by the Soviet Socialist Realism principle;under the early 50s Chinese political atmosphere.In addition,this section also contains the comparison of some works,to show the above principles in the image of the embodiment of the workers.In the third part,it discusses how the workers image played an important role in that society.The workers' image photography pictures and text on "People's pictorial",become a carrier of meaningful ways of speaking,as a "myth".It consists of a stack of material cast carefully processed over years,widely spread and then deeply rooted to people's consciousness.By shaping the image of the workers,the workers are expected to have self-cognition,work status,living habits,ways of thinking,gradually by establishing models and mass communication,it turned to be a universal existence by the following ways:first,the workers' image of "myth" that the signifier consciousness has been widespread,supported each other,showing the myth of a multidimensional system,constituted a common social significance;secondly,the "people's pictorial" by the workers' image presentation,constructed a shared cultural identity for the working class;third,the spread of workers' image by "people's pictorial”became a ceremony that constructed and maintained an orderly and meaningful cultural world,dominate and hold the whole working class derived there from and circulation activities;fourth,"people's pictorial",empowered dominated way of communication,with its comprehensive content and a wide audience,it became the most influential visual media at that time.The fourth part is the summary of the above research.As the only country authority pictorial,"people's pictorial" presented the classic workers' image in early 50s.It has become the precious heritage of the lingering,offered resources for the after the state power and other times of the working class,and existed as an important thought of their historical narrative and generation of memory storage.
