Study On The Operation Mode Of The Breast Milk Bank Of CHOS Hospital

The World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund co-published a statement in 1980: Breastmilk is the best food for infants and young children.When mothers cannot breastfeed in person,the first choice is to use breast milk from other sources.Under appropriate circumstances,human milk bank should be established.The establishment of human milk bank is very necessary.Various studies have shown that breastfeeding can reduce the risk of certain diseases and benefit the children’s future growth,especially for critically ill newborns and premature infants in intensive care units.Although the human milk bank has been set up in foreign countries for more than 100 years,it is still a new thing in China,and the construction is still in a preliminary exploration stage.Due to the limitations of operating funds,venues,and milk sources,though the development of human milk bank has been kind of fast in China,the establishment of human milk bank across the country is not well-balanced.In 2016,Shanghai’s first human milk bank was established at CHOS Hospital.After the establishment,qualified and reliable breastmilk could be provided free to critically ill newborns,premature infants and other infants in need in Shanghai’s hospitals.After one and a half years’ of operation,the CHOS Hospital’s human milk bank has received attention and support from the whole society,but it also faces many challenges.This paper mainly dives into the operating mode of the CHOS hospital’s human milk bank and uses the methods of literature reviewing,reading existing documents of the human milk bank,direct observation and participatory observation to understand the organizational structure,working methods,actual conditions,problems and solutions of the CHOS hospital’s human milk bank through case studies.For the existing difficulties and unaddressed problems of the human milk bank,the author also offers opinions and suggestions.It is expected that the content of this paper will let the public know why the human milk bank is needed as well as the necessity of its existence and further promotion.It will contribute to improving the operating system of China’s human milk bank from the perspective of social work.
