Time,the eye of history,is indispensable to study history.History sequential thinking that focuses on historical time is an important history discipline thinking,as the basis and precondition for historical understanding and historical analysis.With the curriculum reform,the era that emphasizes on discipline accomplishment has begun.History Course Standard of High school(draft)places the concept of space-time in the five core accomplishment clearly.That means the requirement of students,time competence has been further improved.Therefore,the cultivation of students’ sequential thinking and the implementation of time competence in middle school history teaching is necessary.This paper,taking the cultivation of sequential thinking in middle school history teaching as the research object,explores the connotation and defines it as:to understand the mechanical time system and use the related timing expressions to establish framework based on time sequence of historical events;in turn to understand the people,places and events in this architecture system,to understand the causal relationships of history,to understand the personality and behavior characteristics and psychological features of the problems such as history continuity and change.The paper resolves elements and goal levels of sequential thinking:be divided to attitude and ability in the form;being divided from the content,the first level is to know the mechanical timing system and used their time expressions,and the second level is establishing architecture based on time sequence of historical events and understand the people,places,events and nature of historical knowledge construction in this architecture system.On this basis,the paper discusses the significance of cultivating history sequential thinking from the views of historical discipline,domestic history curriculum reform of elementary education,and curriculum reform experience abroad.To study the current middle school students’ sequential thinking level and teachers’ training condition,the writer took the research at Yangzhou S Middle School,using questionnaire,ability tests and classroom observation to obtain relevant information.According to the survey,middle school students are generally weak at sequential thinking consciousness,and develop unevenly on the specific sequential thinking ability;the teachers lack scientific cognition on sequential thinking,cannot determine the corresponding training objectives at different levels based on students’ mind and body development,and do not train students in systematic manner.Based on analysis and study,the writer finds that the occurrence of these problems mainly results from students’ individual cognition features and knowledge reserve,teachers’ quality,curriculum content,and other factors such as educational environment.The cultivation of high school students’ history sequential thinking and the improvement of their history accomplishment should be constructed from the following three aspects:Firstly,to seize the precondition of cultivating sequential thinking,such as teachers setting up correct concept of time,improving their own ability of mining and integrating of teaching materials,etc.;secondly,to follow the principle of sequential thinking cultivation;thirdly,to master the methods and ways to cultivate sequential thinking,paying attention to match target levels,to carry forward from knowledge accumulation to thinking deepening gradually,and to innovate teaching forms supported by well-designed and theme-based teaching activities to help students expand and extend.
