Knowledge building instruction is a kind of new instruction, emphasizing that the student is epistemic agency.During the teaching process, there are different types of roles in the community, including scripted roles and emergent roles. The teacher usually using scripted roles to prompt students to participate in the traditional instruction. Obviously, the scripted roles mean that teachers have too much control on the teaching so that it is easy to limit the student's thought,which is against with knowledge building.Therefore, there are a lot of emergent-ed roles which will affect the process of knowledge building. This study tries to discuss the type of generated roles and the influence of emergent-ed roles on depth of idea understanding during knowledge building.This study concentrates on students of grade 3 class 4 in Bai Yunyuan primary school in Nanjing, researcher participating in STS class (science-technology-society)for a semester. Through materials on the internet and observation, the researcher puts forward five kinds of emergent-ed roles - question proposer, skeptic, proponent-er, the person of theoretical construction and the person of comprehensive. Through researching, researcher measures the depth of understanding from two dimensions.Then the researcher develops content encoding system and divides the instruction into four stages:(1) investigating and proposing preliminary idea; (2) choosing a theme; (3)improving ideas; (4) summary.Basing on the video, researcher will encode data and input them into SPSS. It can be concluded:(1) question proposer, skeptic,proponent-er presents the downward trend, the person of theoretical construction and the person of comprehensive presents ascendant trend over time; (2) the point of the depth of idea understanding 1 was falling, the point of the depth of idea understanding 2 remains, the proportion of the depth of idea understanding 3.4,6,8 was rising. Then researcher uses the SPSS to find the relation between the depth of idea understanding and emergent-ed roles:(1) the question proposer promotes the point of the depth of idea understanding 1 (2) the increase of the skeptic will reduce the point of the depth of idea understanding 2; (3) the proponent-er promotes the point of the depth of idea understanding 2;(4) the person of theoretical promotes the point of the depth of idea understanding 4; (4) the person of comprehensive promotes the point of the depth of idea understanding 6.Research shows that: (1) encouraging students to propose constructed problems(2)guiding students to effectively use authoritative data (3)reducing conflicted behavior(4) introducing a variety of research methods, encouraging students to explore to promote depth of understanding (5)focusing on the connection between different ideas.In addition, at the beginning of the teaching, we should encourage more questions to foster divergent thinking and generate diverse views. By encouraging comprehensive, explanation to build good teaching environment.
