In Yan Fu's eight translations,"The Theory of Qunjiquanjie" is the most concentrated discussion of the translation of Yan Fu's free thought.By comparing the difference between the original text and the translated text, the cultural differences and theoretical tensions of Chinese and Western cultures can be discovered.Strictly reusing the method of analysis and comparison also transcends the principle of Mill's freedom in the process of translating the original work of Mill. This article focuses on Yan Fu's translation of “The Theory of Qunjiquanjie” as the core, and combines previous research results with Yan Fu's other translations, letters and handouts to analyze the differences between Yan Fu's liberal concept and Mill's liberty concept and Yan Fu's previous and subsequent issues. From the experience of Yan Fu's early years of study to the formation of his own problem consciousness, from the translation of Western learning to participation in politics,he gradually developed an understanding of freedom in the context of Chinese culture.Summarizing the above, comparing the similarities and differences between Yan Fu's and Mil's view of freedom,he explores the gains and losses in his translation process and outlines Yan Fu's changes in his understanding of freedom during his lifetime.
