A Corpus-based Comparative Study Of The Sports Reports Of China Daily And The New York Times

The success of the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games has made sports news another breakthrough in the contemporary press.China Daily and the New York times,respectively,as the most credible,powerful and mainstream English newspapers of China and the United States,also spend a lot of space to cover the Olympic-related information.Stylistics as an important part of modern linguistic theories,the studies of which are from the discourses of literary works to non-literary discourses,that is,to study the language phenomenon and characteristics from the perspective of stylistics in the field of non-literature.With the rapid development of computer science and network technology,corpus linguistics as an emerging discipline of contemporary linguistics,plays an increasingly important role in applied linguistics due to its large capacity,corpus authenticity,retrieval convenience and other unique advantages.Therefore,this paper aims to analyze the similarities and differences between Chinese and foreign English sports news report based on the corpus-based approach.This paper,through self-built corpus(more than 660000)of China Daily and the New York times with the theme of Olympic Games,based on corpus-based approach and comparative approach,observes stylistic differences from the perspective of graphological level,lexical level,syntactical level and textual level,which is divided into twelve aspects.The results show that the aspects of picture and paragraph in graphological level,lexical diversity and lexical density in lexical level,sentence length,types and passive voice in syntactical level,and text length in textual level have significant differences between the two newspapers.The study is looking forward to providing references for the future learning and teaching of English sports news,sports news writing of reporters,compilation of professional sports books and dictionary and so on.
