Research On The Relationship Between The Singer And The Italian Opera

As one of the most important musical genres in the Baroque period,Opera seria is the very source of the Bel Canto,which has a profound influence on later generations.The castratos,who usual play the leading roles in the Opera seria and are one of the most special people in the history of western music,contributed significantly to the development of the opera seria.Without them,the history of Opera should be rewritten.This paper explores the relation between the castrato and Opera seria,especially their historic influences on the traditions of the Italian Opera seria,for example,the DaCapo Aria.The paper consists of three chapters.Chapter one focus on the castrato’s career and social life,relating to their professional origin,study career,social life and relationship with composer,which are helpful for us to know their life experience and personality,thus getting know further about their presitage and arrogance on the stage.Chapter two draws attention to the castrato’s hegemony on the Opera stage with the discussions to their stage performance and their dominance over playwrights and composers,which helps us to grasp the influence of this special group on Opera seria.Chapter three focuses on the historic impact of the castratos.It’s concerned about their connection with Opera seria,their contributions to its tradition,as well as their influences beyond Opera.
