Interpretation Of Interpersonal Orientation Personality Traits: Evidence From ERP

From the perspective of personality dynamics,Western personality theory believes that the power of personality lies in the inner part of human being.That is to say,the intention,thought,desire or goal of a person is the basis for understanding human behavior.Therefore,the intrapersonal personality theory is proposed.Researchers in the oriental collectivist cultural background believe that the personality motivation does not only come from the inside of human beings completely,but also from the interpersonal relations or the social relations.Therefore,the theory of interpersonal personality is proposed.At present,there are many empirical studies on the intrapersonal personality traits at the neurophysiological level,while the neurophysiological studies on the interpersonal personality traits are relatively inadequate.Some researchers studied interpersonal personality traits by lexical assumptions,but also did not find the relevant evidence.Based on the theory of Language and Situated Simulation,this study further explores the neurophysiological evidence of interpersonal personality traits through the use of situational pictures.This study assumes that subjects who score high and low in the Interpersonal Relatedness Scale have different responses to interpersonal interaction pictures.The concept of "Interpersonal Relatedness" belongs to the levels of character and personality traits from inner to outside.Therefore,the study should be divided into two levels: First of all,the concept of "people's character" contains person's perception,so we must exclude the influence of the character's perception.Experiment ? used the judgment of body pictures and interpersonal pictures to try to find out that there are some differences of ERP components among the interpersonal pictures of IR subjects,and that there is no difference in the ERP components of body pictures.Experiment ?used the judgment experiment under the condition of single person and interpersonal picture,trying to find out there are some differences of the ERP components between the high and low IR subjects on the interpersonal pictures,and that there is no difference of the ERP components on the single person pictures.In this study,some undergraduate students and graduate students from Shanghai Normal University and East China University of Science and Technology were selected by interpersonal personality scales(Ren Qing,Harmony,Family Orientation,Social Sensitivity)in "Cross-Cultural Personality Assessment Inventory" to screen out the high group(12 subjects)and low group(10subjects)for the next experimental study.In Experiment ?,subjects were asked to judge whether the exploration words could describe characteristics in physical pictures and personality in interpersonal pictures.In Experiment ?,subjects were asked to judge whether the explorationwords could describe the characteristics of interpersonal images and personal images.Experiments record individual's EEG indicators,accuracy,reaction time in the task.The results are as follows:(1)The result of Experiment ? is consistent with the hypothesis that interpersonal high-group subjects have greater amplitude of late-stage positive component(LPC)than low-group subjects' under the condition of interpersonal pictures,and the differences between the two groups were mainly found in frontal area and central area.However,there is no difference in LPC amplitude between the two groups under the condition of physical feature pictures.Therefore,Experiment ? excludes the influence of the character perception on the interpersonal personality traits.(2)The result of Experiment ? is not completely consistent with the hypothesis.The amplitude of LPC in high-group subjects is higher than that in low-group subjects under the condition of both interpersonal and single pictures,and the differences between the two groups are mainly reflected in the frontal area.Therefore,Experiment ? doesn't not exclude the influence of intrapersonal personality on IR.The possible reason is that the concept of Interpersonal Relatedness includes concern and understanding of others' inner feelings,and the judgment of personality traits under single pictures' condition also reflects the subjects' interpretation of others' inner world to a certain extent.Therefore,high-groups and low-groups have different EEG indicators under the condition of single pictures.In this study,we find that interpersonal personality traits exist to some extent due to the differences of ERP components reflected by high and low interpersonal relatedness subjects.The findings suggest that the difference between individuals with high and low interpersonal orientation may be reflected in the distribution of attention and arousal of others.
