In the middle of the 19th century,the cultural exchanges between China and those western countries reached to an unprecedented depth with many missionaries,foreign businessmen and diplomats coming to China.The missionary E.C.Bridgman established The Chinese Repository in Guangzhou on May,1832.And the purpose of it is to introduce all kinds of situations about China to foreign people.Up to 51 articles about Chinese study were published on The Chinese Repository during the period.Compared with other periodicals,both of the quantity and quality of articles published on The Chinese Repository were top of them.Undoubtedly,The Chinese Repository has become a significant ground of Chinese study for those foreign people who came to China.Regrettably,it was ended on December,1852 due to various reasons.The study of sinology has aroused wide academic attention by China and the west all the time.And their study for Chinese played an important role of all studies of sinology.This paper explores the meaning and influence on the study of Chinese and the teaching Chinese as a foreign language by summarizing and analyzing these articles in The Chinese Repository.
