Hong Kong is known as the Oriental Hollywood,as the world's third largest film industry base and the second largest exporter of films,Hong Kong film has long been a leader in Chinese film industry. In the 80s,the golden age of the development of Hong Kong film, the film's box office in this period was basically showing the trend of rising year after year(only slightly lower in 1988 than in 1989,but in 1990 was higher than in 1989),at the same time, all kinds of movies flourished and a large number of movie stars occured.Ghosts have always been an important theme in Hong Kong films. With its numerous quantity, wide range of audiences,it has become the typical one in Hong Kong films, and it has also made rapid development in the golden time of Hong Kong films.During this period a total of 104 ghost films were made, accounting for 10%of the same period film production, and some of which were also masterpieces, such as " A Chinese Ghost Story" produced and directed by Xu Ke and Cheng Xiaodong in 1987," Rouge"directed by Guan Jinpeng in 1988.Hong Kong produced a total of 16 female ghosts in 80s(that is,female ghost as a main character in the film),accounting for 15%of the the total films in that period.Compared with male ghost image, female ghost image was often more deeply rooted. The director in shaping the female ghost, often gave them a beautiful sexy appearance and a character daring to love and hate. But such a group of distinctive characters did not cause widespread concern in academia.Female ghost image was put much more emphasis than male ghost image, but why gender difference did not achieve much attention in the field? What kind of cultural ideas did people want to convey through these ghosts?Or what kind of gender reflection these images would bring us?So these problems were worth thinking about from the gender perspective.Based on this consideration, this thesis would analyse Hong Kong ghost movies in the 80s from gender perspective. This thesis mainly included five parts:The first part is Introduction. This section mainly introduced the origin of this paper, the research status and the research method. The second part is overview of the Hong Kong female ghost movies in the 80s.It mainly discussed the Hong Kong female ghost movies from three aspects:the traceability of Hong Kong movies, the overall introduction of the Hong Kong movies, the classification of female ghost movies in the 80s.Based on the analysis from these aspects, the film text were analyzed. The third part analyzed the Hong Kong female ghost movies in the 1980s using the theory in narratology. The study of this part mainly discussed from three aspects:gender awareness in narrative perspective, narrative mode and gender, narrative strategy and gender, and analyzed how female ghost movies reinforced the traditional gender awareness by establishing gender roles, how to strengthen the male control to female by shaping the female ghost image,so as to effectively maintain the domination of male center. The fourth part analyzed the Hong Kong female ghost movies in the 1980s using the film theory.A large number of female ghosts bodies and clothes were showing in the female ghosts movies, which was the expression of male sexual desire.Through the female body possession, the male effectively to achieve the manipulation of female. While male regarded female as a sexual object to meet their desire, meanwhile they had a threat of castration anxiety, which reflected by the horrible image of the female ghost, confined space setting, color and sound using.Through creating the eerie atmosphere of terror, male expressed their fear of female, this results showed male's contradictory attitude to female, they were eager to female, but also feared of female. The last part was this thesis's conclusion. The part clearly pointed out the essence of the male center hidden in the Hong Kong ghost movies.Male strengthened the traditional gender concept through setting different gender roles, and shaping stereotyping of the female image.By showing the female ghosts bodies and clothes, they expressed their desire and fantasy of female, and the terror atmosphere created in the film was the expression of anxiety and fear of female. But in the end the female ghost was uniformed by male to eliminate the threat of ghost female castration, which further deepen the rule of male to female, and highlighted the power and value of male.
