In situ investigation is the base of conservation of earthen sites.Since earthen sites always have great mass and irregular shapes,measuring tools like telemeter robs,lining poles,measuring tapes and GPS are mostly used for today's in-situ investigation.This reduce the result's accuracy.While other methods using 3D laser scanning to produce models cost much money and time and hard to operate,so these are rarely seen in conservation of earthen sites.Multi-view 3D reconstruction is a new technology to produce models by photos,and it is widely used in archaeology and excavation.This new technology is worthy research on conservation and protection of earthen relics.The second part of this article firstly analyses the application of multi-view 3D reconstruction using software Photoscan and uses this technology to produce models of different kinds of earthen sites.And then conducts experiments and modifications on four key processes of this technology,arrange control points,take photos,produce models and data application.A complete technology suitable for conservation of earthen sites is finally completely realized.The third part of this article focuses on application of models.Three experiments are conducted towards different objects,small soil sample piece,outer burial pits of Han yang Mausoleum and great wall relics of Jin Emperor.The results show that the models produced using such technology could be applied to do quantitative analysis,disease statistics and surveying and mapping of earthen sites.In conclusion,it is easy using Photoscan to do multi-view 3D reconstruction and this technology is easy to master.This technology modified could be applied on conservation and protection,models produced could be used in fields like statistical analysis,surveying and mapping.It has great value for further research.
