Wang Zhuo's "Biji Manzhi" Music Concept Research

Wang Zhuo was a scholar living in the Southern Song Dynasty.On Standard Music-My Reflection in Biji written by him is the first work involves ancient music history,musical aesthetics,ci-ology and so on.By studying On Standard Music-My Reflection in Biji,we can get an overall understanding of Wang Zhuo's concept of music history and thoughts of musical aesthetics as well as the similarities of temperament concept among Tang Xianzu,Ye Tang and Wang Zhuo.The paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter discusses the concept of music history represented by On Standard Music-My Reflection in Biji,Wang Zhuo's opinion of music origin and the differences of ci style because of the relationship reversal when music and ci are combined.The second chapter illustrates the opinion of ci-ology and the thoughts of musical aesthetics of Wang Zhuo.From the perspective of Confucian scholar,it elaborates the thoughts of main feeling,mean rule of justice and nature showed in On Standard Music-My Reflection in Biji.To be specific,it expresses the relationship of musical literature form and content,the social function and enlightening effect possessed by ci creation.It discusses he worshiped the style of Su Shi's ci and belittled the traditional concept of poetic education of Liu Yong and Li Qingzhao as well as the facts that the exist of rhythm obeys the nature rule and the rhythm changes from ancient time to nowadays.The third chapter illustrates the traditional concept of temperament and thoughts of musical aesthetics of Wang Zhuo and their similarities to the temperament concept of Tang Xianzu and Ye Tang.The chapter discusses the main ideas of the debate between Shen Jing and Tang Xianzu,Ye Tang 's action of changing music according to ci about Tang Xianzu's drama,the conclusion of the temperament concept of those two people and their similarities of temperament concept to that of Wang Zhuo.
