Motivation, as an important motivative source of individual behavior, its relationships with creativity become one of the most significant topics in the field of creativity research. When it comes to the relationship between extrinsic motivations and creativity, the researchers have not yet reached a consistent conclusion. On the basis of previous researches and the reality, this paper will inspect the differences in the performance of college students’ artistic creation from the perspective of combining intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. In this paper, art college students were selected as examinees, then adapting the between-group design of 2 (intrinsic motivation: high and low) ×3 (extrinsic motivation:high, medium, low). The dependent variable is the level of artistic creation.First, using the Arts Creative Motivation Questionnaire to measure the intrinsic motivation of the examinees, having filtered out examinees who satisfied the conditions of the high intrinsic motivation or the low intrinsic motivation, in all 90 examinees.Secondly, dividing the examinees of the high intrinsic motivation into three groups(high, medium, low) and the examinees of the low intrinsic motivation into three groups (high, medium, low),then measure them the performance of artistic creation. After that, three professors of the Department of Fine Arts and Education in the Academy of Fine Arts of Nanjing Normal University scored all the examinees separately according to the Artistic Performance Scorecard. At last, the average score of the three professors will be the final result of the examinees’ artistic creation. The results of the study show that: (1)The performance of artistic creation of examinees with high intrinsic motivation is better than those with low intrinsic motivation. (2 When examinees in high intrinsic motivation groups are given medium or high level of extrinsic motivation, they will score higher than when they are given low level of extrinsic motivation.(3)When examinees in low intrinsic motivation groups are given medium level of extrinsic motivation, they will score higher than when they are given high or low level of extrinsic motivation.Through the experiment, we get the following conclusions:(1) The performance of artistic creation of examinees with high intrinsic motivation is better than those with low intrinsic motivation.(2) The high level of intrinsic motivation and medium or high level of extrinsic motivation is the best for the development of creativity.(3) Examinees with low level of intrinsic motivation will make a progress when they are given appropriate extrinsic motivation.
