Fu Shan's "Guanzhen Cizhen" Research

A Character Study in Mandarin Colloquial is one of most representative works written by Chauncey Goodrich,an American missionary in the middle and late 19 th century.The first edition was published in 1898.The total number of words is 200,000.4210 chinese characters is arranged by “Wade's-System” from A to B,the first syllable is A,the last syllable is Y.Besides,every letter is followed by phonetics and then is Chinese character which can be composed of them.The Chinese character is followed by words,sentences,in a total of 474 pages.the content are Beijing people frequently used words,phrases,sentences,including rich daily language and distinctive idioms in the late Qing Dynasty.In this sense,the book is a precious historical material which has abundant value in respect of studying Beijing spoken language in the 19 th century.After making a detailed classification and analyzing the book?s linguistic data carefully,I decided to choose Chinese idioms and special words as studying point.At the beginning,I pointed out the representative Chinese idioms and special words as a research object.These idioms and special words are described and explored in detail.And then I classify and summarize the quantifiers,modal particles and "r"-retroflexed words,which are typical Chinese words.Finally,with the combination of contemporary Chinese teaching,I summed up the enlightenment for the preparation of contemporary Chinese dictionary.The paper can be divided into seven charters.The introduction chapter introduces the research status,research significance,research methods and corpus sources of this thesis.The first charter introduces the research object,including the Chauncey Goodrich 's life and the writing of him,then the background,the version of the book,the arrangement of the system and the main contents are illustrated.The second chapter makes a detailed classification and description of the idioms in A Character Study in Mandarin Colloquial.The third chapter analyzes the special words of A Character Study in Mandarin Colloquial including polite words,business words,official words,imperial examinations words and religionwords and others which are input of a detailed analysis,reflecting the Chauncey Goodrich paid attention to Chinese culture.In the forth chapter,we classify and summarize the quantifiers,modal particles and "r"-retroflexed words in A Character Study in Mandarin Colloquial.The fifth chapter analyzes the merits and shortcomings of the book,and summarizes the enlightenment of the book on the compilation of the Chinese Dictionary.The last charter is the charter of conclusion,which gives a conclusion to the studying in the paper,and also point out some disadvantages of the paper.Besides,the linguistic materials are attached to the appendix,which are beneficial to interested readers referring to,but also for understanding the paper in a direct way.
