The ideology influences each historical phenomenon invisibly. In the previous studies of Tang calligraphy history, the overall background of ideology at that time is often insufficiently emphasized or incompletely perceived. After being included in the structure of Chinese culture in the Tang dynasty, the common sense and rationality are considered as the meta-structure of social ideology of Confucianism, and they strongly influence the society of Tang dynasty in all aspects. As a principal tool of spreading information and expressing emotions, the calligraphy reflects society, economy, politics and culture of that time, and it is also certainly influenced by the common sense and rationality. This thesis is based on the influence of common sense and rationality in the Tang calligraphy. The main body of this thesis is comprised of four chapters. In the first chapter, the author introduces the concept of common sense and rationality, and briefly discusses the emergence and the progress of the development of this concept,as well as its philosophical relation with the calligraphy of Tang dynasty. In the second chapter, the author discusses the impact of the Study of He-Fen affected by common sense and rationality on the calligraphy of Tang dynasty. This impact manifests mainly the circumstances of calligraphers under the liege relationship. In the third chapter, the author proposes a dualistic concept of rationality and authority containing the structure of common sense and rationality, and its respective representation in the conception and practice of Tang calligraphy. In the fourth chapter, the author analyses the impact of the secularization of Tang Buddhism on the calligraphy brought by common sense and rationality,as well as anti-Buddhists' points of view on calligraphy.Based on the structure of common sense and rationality in the ideological context of Tang dynasty, this thesis discusses its comprehensive influence on the Tang calligraphy. The author aims to apply the research results of the ideological history to the study of the calligraphy history,to improve the study of the latter.
