As a Chinese-French artist, Zhu Dequn was the first Chinese to be elected as a lifetime academician by the French Academy of Fine Arts. This great honor comes from his constant exploration and innovation in art. He integrated Chinese poetic conception into Western colorful painting world to create philosophically abstract painting subjects with communication with nature and life. At the same time, his paintings were also influenced by Western abstractionism, which was sort of a process of combination of "East--West--East". Not forgetting the spirit of Chinese traditional culture, Zhu selectively absorbed the essence of Western abstract art and created his unique painting language and art world. His artworks exhibited both formal beauty extrinsically and artistic conception and philosophy intrinsically. This paper will start with Zhu's life to know about his life experience and analyze Chinese and Western culture that intertwined in his art road. Then from two aspects:the "fusion of the Chinese and Western" and his pursuit of formal beauty, we will summarize the formation of his artistic conception, and discuss in depth the causes of that formation:the influence of Chinese traditional culture, and Western representative artists and modern culture. The third part of the paper will analyze Zhu's style and features through a large number of his paintings, and demonstrate the diversity of the composition of his artworks, the imagery of color expression, and the impact of the "point" and "line" in Chinese calligraphy and painting. Moreover, the unique musical rhythm in his artworks, the texture of Chinese water color, and the creation of artistic conception will all be analyzed and presented in the third part. Seemly simple strokes and lines, however, can depict the everlasting life of the university; Ink and color is neither Western nor the facsimile of Chinese painting in the traditional sense; the smartness of the line is obviously affected by Chinese calligraphy. Appreciating his work can generate an urge to dance and the meditation of the world. Finally, Zhu's abstract art inherited the artistic ideas and goals of "fusing Chinese and Western art, and creating the art of times" proposed by Lin Fengmian early in Hangzhou National College of Arts. His abstract artworks are full of classical spirit of Chinese traditional culture as well as the embodiment of modern consciousness. He is part of the process of modernization of Chinese art in the 20th century. Zhu's art concepts keeping pace with the times and his creation not only inspire and enlighten Chinese contemporary artists, but also enrich the cultural exchange between China and the West.
