Beijing Sanduotang TV Documentary Creation Research

TV documentary has the functions of reflecting life, recording history, spreading knowledge and reacting to public opinion. In the process of international communication,if you want to know a country's national conditions, watching TV documentary is one of the most effective and the most thorough way. The development of TV documentary plays an important role in communicating the image of a country.Since 21 st century, with the increasing attention to the documentary, more and more television stuff have attempted to produce documentary. Apart from those teams who specialize in the documentary production in the state-owned television stations, there are a lot of private firms or enthusiastic teams who also devote themselves to the development of our country's TV documentary. Beijing SDT Media Co., Ltd.(Hereinafter to be referred to as “San Duo Tang”) is a leading domestic company who is dedicated to invest, produce and issue documentary. Meanwhile, San Duo Tang is the first three new board listed dedicated-to-documentary firm and well known as the “Chinese documentary first unit”.And its works, including The Rise of the Great Nations, The Power of Corporations, The Rhyme of Tang and The Rhyme of Song, almost won all the domestic prizes given to the documentary. As a result, I believe it will be of great use and value to promote the creation of Chinese documentary by studying the San Duo Tang's productions and analyzing its design ideas.The main content of this article consists of three parts. The first part analyzes the development of television documentary. It introduces the concept of television documentary and the five development stages in China, as well as the background of establishment of Beijing Sanduotang Media. The second part analyzes the documentaries which are produced by Sanduotang Media. Based on the current mainstream creative approaches of television documentary such as humane care ideas, narrative documentary,civilian documentary and scene reconstruction etc., the products made by Sanduotang Media such as “The Rhyme of Tang Dynasty”, “The Power of Corporations”, and “The Rise of the Great Nations”, “The Rhyme of Song Dynasty and “The River from Heaven”are analyzed. In the third part of this article, the author proposes some suggestions for TV documentary creation. Some inspirations are drawn from the combination of the author's own intern experiences in Sanduotang Media, literature research and investigation into the documentaries made by Sanduotang, which may enlighten the the development of television documentary in China.
