The article begins with the analysis of brushwork constructions of Sketching,a set of 12 pieces,by Sun Long,which is archived at the Taipei Palace Museum.This leads into dissecting the features of spontaneous expression and environment-the creation of Sun Long's bird-and-flower painting from the aspect of the natural development of art.Sketching is also compared with other works of Sun Long that have been preserved,in order to find the various ways of how he expressed the spiritual meaning of art.The article makes an inquiry into his spontaneous expression and environment-how creating has changed from objective to Imagism,and later how the images were influenced from the built environment.The abundant aesthetic factors,tastes,interests and cultural connotations make up the achievement in which an artist realizes his own spiritual value of art.This article will focus on the following aspects:Studying and verifying related historical materials,images,inscriptions and stamps of this set of Sketching of Sun Long.Organizing and analyzing the biography and historical records of him in order to replenish the lack of historical material of the study of Sun Long.Investigates the expressive form,the brushwork constructions,the personal patterns and the artistic conception of this set of Sketching from both aesthetic and cultural aspects—with considerations towards aesthetics,and drawing conclusions on the ground-breaking brushwork skills.The Ming Dynasty is the pinnacle of freehand bird-and-flower paintings.The development of art,always begins with inheritance,which then leads to innovation.The author places Sun Long back in the historical periods in whichhe belongs to.From Sun Long's friendship with the elite class of the society and his time serving the emperor,the author infers how Sun Long's spirit of“sketching” and “conception advocation ” had influenced the trend of bird-and-flower paintings in early Ming Dynasty and fulfilled his artistic spirits.As a practical scholar,facing these questions,the author begins with the analysis of art itself,which is the analysis of brushwork language,and avoids the derivative ways of research of previous scholars basing on limited historical materials.He analyzes the graphic content by combining it with interpretations of ancient painting theories in order to find Sun Long's artistic value and contemporary influence,in the hopes of finding a clear path of development for bird-and-flower paintings.
