| As a traditional culture peculiar to China,calligraphy manifested in Chinese characters develops gradually to the present thanks to the imitation of the past outstanding calligraphers’ works and the creation of "calligraphic style" as well as "the use of calligraphy" by literati of dynasties.Having experienced the evolution of the calligraphic style from Seal Character,Official Script,Cursive Script,and Regular Script to Running Hand,the calligraphy,at the same time,experiences continually the process of "breakthrough" as well as "regression",thus it can be said that the calligraphy experiences constantly the samsara of destruction and construction.As is said in the preface of Three Kingdoms,"The empire,long divided,must unite;long united,must divide",Chinese calligraphy along its long history of thousands of years goes along the road that "The calligraphy,long connived,must be restrained;long connived,must be restrained".In the history of calligraphy "back to the ancients in the calligraphy" which occurred in several dynasties,joints between "connivance" and "restraint",is of great importance.However,at present in the calligraphy the phenomenon and the ideological trend of "back to the ancients" are still prominent,and the tendency that "back to one ancient calligraphic style" falls with the rise of "back to another ancient calligraphic style" appears,which is determined by the nature of inheritance peculiar to the calligraphy.This paper selects representative ideological trends and advocates of "back to the ancients" from the ideological trend in the last thirty years,observes the road of creation of contemporary calligraphy,and,combining with the phenomenon of "back to the ancients" in the calligraphy in various dynasties,analyzes the merits and demerits of "back to the ancients" in the calligraphy in contemporary times.With regard to the diversified phenomenon and ideological trends of "back to the ancients" in the calligraphy in modern times,the author holds that it is necessary to evaluate the source,significance and effect of them in order to draw on their strong points,avoid their weak points and select a relatively right road to innovation for the present calligraphy creation. |
