This paper aims to provide analysis of the island as in reality, literature and political practice, through looking into the literal and metaphorical concept of the island, comparing real historical events against myths and tales, to lead to the conclusion that the island can be seen as an experiment field mirroring realities on the mainland. The islands seem to be far and isolated from the mainland, yet the two are inextricably linked; the geographical isolation and psychological enclosure of the island makes them the perfect place where history can be restored and studied. Depiction of the island in literature is often times utopian imagination based on introspection of the mainland. Many micronations were established, preserved and finally collapsed in history. These island‐like political practices also regard islands as fields testing political models of the mainland.
