Retrieval-induced forgetting(RIF) is defined as a type of forgetting phenomenon that retrieving part of information can reduce the memory quantity of other relatedinformation, which is a hot spot in the field of memory research in recent years. The standard paradigm of RIF and a large number of experimental studies about the RIF are using English materials, and the object items are all retrievaled structurally in the retrieval practice phase. The mechanism of retrieval-induced forgetting is including the inhibitory account and the non-inhibitory account.Anderson(2003) laid out four properties that provide unique support for the inhibition account of RIF. Previous studies on the mechanism of RIF are mostly validating one of the four properties. In this study, the object items are retrievaled by semantic retrieval methods in the retrieval practice phase which is suitable for the Chinese materials.Experiment 1 is same with the standard paradigm of RIF except that makes use of Chinese materials and semantic retrieval methods instead of English materials and structure retrieval methods in the retrieval practice phase. We will prove that the semantic retrieval method can also generate retrieval-induced forgetting in this way.Experiment 2 is to verify the cue independence under the no category clues in the retrieval practice phase condition;Experiment 3 is a further study of the cue independence with the covert cuing strategy in the retrieval practice phase. The main results are as follows: 1)A significant main effect of RIF is found in experiment 1 proves that the mehtod with Chinese materials and semantic retrieval are feasible. 2)A significant main effect of RIF is yet found when the category clues do not appear in the retrieval practice phase which proves the cue independence of inhibitory account and denies the noninhibitory account. 3)A significant main effect of RIF is also found when “the covert cuing strategy” has been controled, which is a further verification of the cue independence of inhibitory account. |
