1 BackgroundBenign prostatic hyperplasia,(BPH)is a commonly seen disease among middle-to-old-aged men, with the rapidly aging society in our country,BPH will have a clinically high incidence rate.Lower urinary tract symptoms(LUTS)are the main clinical symptoms of BPH,which commonly affects the quality of life of old-aged men, thus drawing our attention to this issue. The mechanism of the pathogenesis has no been fully elucidated, presently western medicine relies on observation cum follow-up,medication and surgery.A portion of patients can have their voiding difficulties rapidly solved through surgery, but the lack of improvement in post-operative urinary retention symptoms is a problem for both patients and doctors.Common medication targeting post-operative BPH are a receptor inhibitors and M receptor inhibitors.Due to the side effects of these 2 medications, they are not widely used in a clinical setting.Hence, the search for a more effective way to improve the post-operative uriary retention symptoms is of great significance. In Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),BPH is classified under "Jing Long" and "Long Bi",and has long been recognized in recorded history. After thousands of years of research into BPH,much experience has been gained for treating it effectively.According to large amounts of literature, there is reliable evidence that TCM has the means of treating BPH effectively, among them using Wu Ling San to regulate the Qi transformation function of the Bladder so as to improve micturition function has been effective.2 ObjectiveThis research uses the International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS)namely urinary retention symptoms(I-PSS1),obstructive symptoms(I-PSS2),Quality of life(QOL)and highest urinary flow rate(Qmax)as therapeutic evaluation indexes to explore the efficacy of using Wu Ling San to alleviate voiding symptoms post-surgery in order to provide a more effective clinical course of action in combination with western medicine.3 ContentThose who meet the selection criteria were randomly assigned to either of two groups,22 in the treatment group and 21 in the control group. The control was given bladder irrigation, hemostatic and anti-infection treatment in addition to postoperative routine protocols. The treatment group included on top of said treatment Wu Ling San granules(one prescription, twice a day to be taken with warm water). Both groups had their observational markers recorded at 1 week and 4 weeks post-surgery and the data was analyzed using SPSS22.0.4 OutcomeAfter a week, patients in the control group who received surgery had significantly lower I-PSS,I-PSS,QOL scores and Qmax scores significantly higher than before surgery where(p<0.05).I-PSS1 scores before and after surgery were not statistically significant(p>0.05);whereas in the treatment group,I-PSS,I-PSS 1,I-PSS2 and QOL scores were lower than before surgery and Qmax was higher than before surgery(p<0.05).Between the two groups, there was no statistical significance between I-PSS,I-PSS1,I-PSS2,QOL and Qmax scores(p>0.05);in the treatment group the success rate was 5%,effective rate was 95%,total effective rate was 100%and in the control group, the success rate was 0%,effective rate was 85%,total effective rate was 85%,total effective rate was significantly higher in the treatment group compared with the control(p<0.05).For the control group at 4 weeks after surgery,I-PSS,I-PSS1,I-PSS2,QOL scores were lower than before surgery and Qmax score was higher than before surgery(p<0.05).For the treatment group,I-PSS,I-PSS1,I-PSS2,QOL scores were significantly lower than before surgery,Qmax was significantly higher than before surgery(p<0.05).Comparing between two groups, the I-PSS,I-PSS1,I-PSS2,QOL scores were significantly lower than the control group(p<0.05)whereas there was no significant difference between Qmax scores(p>0.05).The total effective rate of both groups were 95%,however there was a difference in the effectiveness between two groups whereby the treatment group had greater efficacy compared to the control(p=0.000<0.01)5 ConclusionSurgery can quickly solve issues with lower urinary tract obstruction and increase the quality of life, however it has limited effects on improving immediate symptoms of urinary retention after surgery. On the foundation of improving post-surgery symptoms,Wu Ling San can assist in improving prostate symptoms score and increase the quality of life but it has no advantage over improving highest urine flow.
