As the most important road transport tool,heavy duty tractor-trailer usually travels for a long time on the highway.The fuel consumption consumed by wind resistance appeals more and more attention.This paper selects a certain brand of tractor-trailer for the research.The author has tried to put forward some optimized schemes in aerodynamic characteristics to reducing wind resistance,and verified its contribution to the fuel economy of each one,determined the best drag reduction scheme.First of all,the author putted forward some feasible optimized schemes,then proportional clay models had been made according to the different schemes.After that,wind tunnel test was carried out in each group to determine their respective drag coefficient.According to the results of the wind tunnel test,four groups tractor-trailers are selected: Standard Semi-tractor(with Cab wind deflector)+ Standard Semi-trailer;Wind resistance optimized Semi-tractor +Standard Semi-trailer;Wind resistance optimized Semi-tractor +Fishtail Semi-trailer;Wind resistance optimized Semi-tractor+Fish-back Semi-trailer;To take coast-down tests in different groups,then obtained different sliding curves.The coast-down tests results are in good agreement with the wind tunnel tests results before.According to the coast-down tests,the author selected two typical sliding curves,which would be the variable inputs of chassis dynamometer tests.The author has compared the results of fuel consumption in chassis dynamometer tests to find out the relationship between drag optimizations for tractor-trailer and the contribution proportion in fuel consumption.The author has calculated the fuel consumption of tractor-trailers under the condition of different coast-down test curves using the software AVL-cruise.The simulation results and the chassis dynamometer tests results have the same tendency.The best drag reduction scheme of tractor-trailer in this paper is Wind resistanceoptimized Semi-tractor +Fishtail Semi-trailer.
