The Transformation Of Xi'an Yongning Gate And Its Cultural Symbols In The Perspective Of Urban Communication

The City Wall all is a product of ancient military defense, a special form of architecture, and a kind of material form that still exists with the passage of time. It is not only closely related to the historical changes, but has a stake in our daily life. With the ups and downs of history, it has its own function and significance of its existence. There is a function and significance in it since it exists coupled with the ups and downs of history.On the research of Xi'an City Wall, the study on the wall body expedition, military defense capabilities, construction form and other aspects carried out earlier and have obtained a wealth of results. It is relatively rare in the field when relating to the City Wall culture and the spread of the city, so as the spread of the city wall as a cultural symbol. These two points are not commensurate with the profound historical and cultural heritage of the City Wall in Xi'an. With the promotion and development of ancient capital, the City Wall in Xi'an has already become an important part of urban pattern of the city and cultural life of people. As a precious historical and cultural heritage, the cultural significance of the City Wall in Xi'an is getting more and more attention as well as its symbol of city's spirit. With the increasing scale of the city and the urban space, the complexity of the urban space determines the diversity of urban symbols. The city's value and significance can be extended only when the distinctive sign representing city's image and positioning is extracted. The unique value of Yongning Gate of City wall in Xi'an as a cultural symbol has emerged.Starting from the perspective of urban communication, this thesis will discuss how to build Yongning gate into a cultural symbol of Xi'an the city. The significance and function of cultural symbols to the urban image of Xi'an and the people of Xi'an will be expounded. Then how to spread the cultural symbols and the image of the city of Xi'an at the same time will be discussed.The thesis consists of three parts, the main body includes four chapters mentioned below.The first part is made up of two chapters. The second chapter will give a rough introduction of the development of Xi'an City Wall, emphatically analyze the architectural style of the city wall of Xi'an City, and explain its function. In first part the object of this thesis -Yongning Gate of the City Wall in Xi'an- its historical changes will be introduced in details, which lead to the starting point -the rehabilitation of Yongning Watchtower and comprehensive renovation project of Xi'an city wall Yongning gate area. With the City Wall's military defense function disappeared, the function of the Walls in the urban construction has been transferred to carrying on the new city construction. The third chapter will sum up the effect of the transformation through field observation, and will explore the reason for the comprehensive renovation project from the perspective of urban development.The second part, is the fourth chapter, starting from the City Wall and Yongning Gate itself, will elaborate the transmission of function and the features of cultural symbol as the carrier of ancient architecture and the cultural meaning of Yongning Gate.The last part will analyze the means of Yongning Gate as a cultural symbol from the perspective of city communication making use of City Festival, the new media's influence, the Xi'an city image and the core of urban culture propaganda, to achieve the purpose of urban communication.
