Lauryl methacrylate(LMA)functionalized polyoropylene(PP)nonwoven(PP-g-LMA)is constructed by ultraviolet(UV)irradiation grafted polymerization reaction. The amphiphilic PP-g-GMA-DA nonwoven is synthesized by grafted of glycidyl methacrylate(GMA)onto PP nonwoven through UV radiation graft reaction and subsequently ring opening reaction with Dodecylamine(DA).The PP-g-GMA-DA further reacts with Na2SO3 by epoxy ring opening to prepare the PP-g-GMA-DA-Na2SO3.The samples are characterized by FT-IR,SEM,XPS and water contact angle(CA).Three modified polypropylene(PP)nonwovens have different hydrophilic groups' contents and similar alky chains, which are employed as absorbents to study the adsorption behaviors of Endocrine disrupting chemicals(EDCs)in aqueous solutions.Xylene and bisphenol A(BPA)are selective as probe and combine with the adsorption performance of three PP nonwovens to elucidate the hydrophilic groups'interaction in the adsorption process. The results suggested the hydrophilic groups could not form hydrogen bond with xylene in the adsorption process. However the hydrophilic groups could form hydrogen bonds with the water molecules, water molecules carried the xylene to the surface of PP nonwoven, reduced the mass transfer distance and accelerated the process of film diffusion.Xylene molecular was prone to collide effectively with the adsorption sites on the adsorbents in aqueous solution. The adsorption rate and adsorption capacity of xylene enhance remarkably. The hydrophilic groups play an inductive role in xylene adsorption process. For bisphenol A(BPA),hydrophilic groups could form hydrogen bonding with BPA molecular.Hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions simultaneously take part in the adsorption of BPA.Therefore the hydrophilic groups predominantly act as a capture part for the adsorption of BPA.The study of adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm indicated that PP-g-LMA,PP-g-GMA-DA and PP-g-GMA-DA-Na2SO3 adsorption of xylene or BPA could be well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models respectively. The adsorption thermodynamic results suggested the adsorption process of xylene and BPA was a spontaneous and exothermic process.
