The Application Of Translation Technology In Literature Retranslation Studies

Retranslation, particularly literature retranslation, has been heatedly discussed for centuries. On the one hand, literature retranslation, particularly classic literature retranslation, is in great need to fulfill the demand for culture. On the other hand, poor quality of retranslation work frustrates people. As a result, some complain about limited researches on literature retranslation, others even doubt the existence of literature retranslation. In the light of that, researches on literature retranslation should be developed urgently. Traditionally, scholars are keen on researches of retranslation from the perspective of translation theories and their own translating experiences.In the age of digitalization and computerization, rapid development of computer technology enhances vitality of great deal of innovation. It not only brings about convenience in terms of word processing, but also impact on every sphere of translation activities.It is commonly believed that using computer to participate in translation is just machine translation automatically without human intervention. The initial researches indeed concentrated only on "automatic" translation, which soon turned out to generate few results due to the limitation of computer technology and complexity of human mind that generates language. Witnessing the limitation of machine translation, some researchers began to emphasize on translation memory. They developed translation technology so as to enable translators to use computer to store translated sentences or articles. As a result, translators or proofreaders can improve their translation and evaluate translation quality.This paper aims to introduce translation technology into literature retranslation study. Through illustrating possibility and necessity of literature retranslation, and the interwoven relationship between computer-aided translation technology and traditional translation and retranslation theories and studies, this paper is taking great effort to explore retranslation of literary works from the perspective of utilization of translation technology.After elaborating the difference between Computer-aided translation and Machine Translation, the paper also tries to clarify that technology alone can not solve all translation problems. It is the integration of computer technology with human intervention that can enhance the development of retranslation researches.Furthermore, the paper focuses on evaluation of retranslation through a case study, which is the most important and prominent part of the study.Finally, the paper concludes that using different translation technologies can describe styles and features of literature retranslation works, hence providing a comparatively and faithfully quantitative data for literature retranslation studies. It also presents an outlook that in the future rapid development of translation technology will offer more promising aid for literature retranslation.
