With the rapid development of wireless communication technology,an antenna system as a radio front-end needs to adapt to various communication requirements. In this environment, the reconfigurable antenna integrated with the reconfigurable technology and the antenna can be automatically adjusted according to different work requirements to adapt to various application environments.Electrically-tuned liquid crystal material is a kind of material whose dielectric constant can be continuously changed by controlling external bias voltage. As a basis for realizing a reconfigurable antenna,it is a research hotspot in the industry in recent years. This article is devoted to the research of frequency reconfigurable antennas realized on liquid crystal tuning technology. The principle analysis, structural design and physical processing of liquid crystal materials and microstrip antennas based on liquid crystal materials are discussed in depth. The main contents of this paper include:a)A Ka-band frequency reconfigurable rectangular microstrip patch antenna was designed using the electrically tuned liquid crystal material as a medium and the microstrip antenna as a carrier. The antenna adopts a multi-layer design. The radiation patch is embedded in the liquid crystal material, and the inverted microstrip structure is adopted at the antenna feed point.b)In order to solve the narrow bandwidth problem of the microstrip patch antenna,an additional parasitic patch is introduced on the basis of the work of the frequency reconfigurable antenna based on the liquid crystal material, thereby expanding the antenna bandwidth.c)The working characteristics and principles of electrically-tuned liquid crystal materials were studied. The principle of microstrip dielectric testing based on the deembedding technology was analyzed. The dielectric characteristics of a transmission linear liquid crystal material operating in the frequency range of 23 to 38 GHz was correspondingly designed. In this paper, the feasibility of the design method of frequency-reconfigurable antenna based on liquid crystal materials is proved by simulation analysis and practical tests. It has certain reference value for the design and application of reconfigurable passive devices and antennas based on liquid crystal materials.
