The trend of the development of wireless communication represented human desire to the high communication rate. From 2G to 4G today, various technologies have been put forward to obtain high data rate under the limited spectrum resources. Among them, multiple-input multiple-output technology was widely used in the latest wireless communication standards, which is the key technology in next generation mobile communication systems. Without increasing the bandwidth, MIMO technology only increases the number of antennas for multiplexing, thus increasing the complexity of wireless signal processing, therefore the very large scale integrated circuit implementation( VLSI) of MIMO detector become the major challenge for wireless receivers.In this thesis, several existing classical MIMO detection algorithms were listed and the analysis of their respective advantages and disadvantages were presented in details. Aiming at the high complexity of detection for MIMO systems, a low complexity nonlinear detection algorithm for high-order modulation was proposed and its architecture design was presented. The algorithm proposed can effectively improve the detection efficiency using a layered approach. Based on link-level simulation, the bit error ratio performance and the computational complexity of several algorithms such as MMSE-SIC, Sphere Decoding and Layered Low Complexity Soft-Output were analyzed, finally, the extraction and quantitative analysis of the core operators of the algorith m are implemented. The simulation results indicate that the proposed low complexity MIMO detection algorithm can achieve similar performance of maximum likelihood detection with much lower computational complexity, thus obtaining a good trade-off between complexity and performance. The detection algorithm is straightforward to implement in hardware, which makes it valuable for practical application in multi-standard wireless receivers.
