Wireless sensor networks can real-time gathering the information of the environment and the object monitored through sensor's cooperation. At the same time it can handle the information such as temperature, humidity, pressure, light intensity to find the pattern of the objects monitored. With the rapid development of technology and social life, people's requirement for application of wireless sensor networks have been growing. Poor information can not satisfy the demand of modern life. Compared with traditional manners, image contains more information and for a long time be the most important source for people to cognize the world around. In these circumstances, it is not only an urgent task for us to bring image into Wireless sensor networks but full of great significance.This system adopts a multi-level network architecture which is consisted of image acquisition node, wireless gate and remote server. Wireless transmission module can transmit the real-time information in a low power consumption by combining the Zig Bee short-range transmission technology and 3G technology. The image acquisition node contains wireless transmission and image acquisition. STM32 has been used as the central processing unit of the image acquisition to control the OV2640 for image capture and sent out compressed JPEG images via wireless transmission module. Wireless sensor networks employ the Zig Bee protocol combined with static routing algorithm to run the network which is organized by the peer-to-peer network architecture. This networking mode has advantages of simple construction and higher reliability. Image from all sensors finally converge at wireless gate, and then it would be sent to the remote server through 3G(WCDMA) network, therefore it can be browsed at anywhere.This article contains the design of the hardware circuit and software programming of this system. The hardware circuit consists of Zig Bee modules, CC2530, CC2591 and EM770W(3G modules). The software programming includes the driver for the camera, Zig Bee communication program, 3G module's communication program and server program.Finally, after the tests of all parts of the system, it shows that the system can achieve the design requirements. Compared with the traditional system, it has cheaper cost, low power dissipation and great monitoring range which is very suitable for forestry, greenhouse cultivation and environment monitoring.
