With the rise of mobile internet service, users' requirements for multimedia service,as well as the energy consumed by wireless networks are rapidly increasing. That is,on the one hand, traditional wireless cellular network cannot meet users' demands. On the other hand, energy consumption, having a trend to increase,in wireless networks is too large. To guarantee the quality of multimedia service for users, how to improve network performance with multimedia transmission technologies is a significant issue. In this paper, research work has been done to focus on how to reduce power consumption and increase energy efficiency through base station cooperation for multimedia transmission in heterogeneous networks.Main contributions are as follows,First,we do surveys on characteristics of architecture of wireless networks and multimedia transmission technologies, making a basic for continuous research on energy-efficient multimedia transmission.Secondly,a neat method to describe user/service behaviors is introduced to heterogeneous networks.Considering user/service behaviors,a scheme of base station(BS)cooperation in service modes is presented, where multicast transmission is served by macro base station, while unicast transmission is offered by small base station for patching for hot-spot users requiring the same service. Both theoretical deduction and simulation results demonstrate that the optimal length of time window for multicast transmission and corresponding bandwidth allocation can be attained to maximize the energy efficiency(EE)of the networks, with EE improved from 40%to 89%compared with traditional multimedia multicast transmission scheme. Finally, considering user behaviors and exploiting base station cooperation,a multimedia transmission scheme of base station cooperation in coverage area is proposed to realize the proper coverage for hotspot area. Both theoretical and simulation results illustrate that proper base station cooperation with optimal coverage will bring a resource allocation to maximize EE.Compared with all unicast transmission scheme,EE is improved from 24%to 74%.EE of proposed scheme is 14%higher than that of rough multicast transmission scheme. The results also show that the degree of user convergence is one of the main factors that affect base station cooperation and multimedia transmission.
