With the rapid development of information technology, modern wireless communication system plays a very important role in the process of information technology. Antenna as the window of wireless communication is received more and more attention by researcher and manufacturer. Due to the rapid development of miniaturization and intelligent wireless communication systems, miniaturization, high gain, wide band, easy integration antenna became research focus. As a new artificial medium, metamaterials have some unusual properties that are not possessed in the traditional materials. It broke the traditional design method which provides the new ideas and method. In this paper, Left-handed material and FSS(Frequency selective surface) is used to design miniaturized antenna and high gain antenna.Firstly, extraction of artificial medium equivalent permittivity and permeability is analyzed by Smith theory. Metamaterials unit which consists of Split rings and metal wire is extracted equivalent permittivity and permeability by Matlab. It indicates that the unit has negative equivalent permittivity and permeability.Secondly, a double-band antenna based on the composite right left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) is proposed. This antenna is a composite which adopts interdigital capacitor and bending inductance to realize the zero order resonance. The size of the antenna is 30 × 20 ×1.5mm3 and measured bandwidth is 800MHz(1.9GHz-2.7GHz)and 1.4GHz(4.7GHz-6.1GHz). The gain is -1.6dBi at 2.4GHz and 2dBi at 5GHz. The bandwidth covers the full band of WLAN. The test results are in good agreement with the simulation results. At last, a high gain antenna loaded with FSS is designed. The antenna is used FSS which consists of split ring to enhance the gain. The gain without FSS at 5.85GHz is 8.14dBi and the gain with FSS is 13.6dBi. The gain of antenna loaded with FSS increases 5.46dBi compared to one without FSS.
