With the impact of the sea expanding gradually, and the development of sonar technology, Imaging sonar is used more and more widely in underwater acoustic engineering.However, due to the interference of complex environment of seawater and the disturbance caused by imaging system, the image data received are usually contaminated by noise,therefore, to analysis and extraction of sonar image, denoising play the key role in pre-processing.The methods of Partial Differential Equation (PDE) have been widely used in optical images denoising. However, the application of PDE in the denoising of sonar images has been seldom researched before. In this paper, the application of the four PDE models--PM model,LS model, ROF model, and YK model was experimented in sonar image, and then the property of the four models were compared and analysed objectively based on the experiment result and the blurred target edges characteristics of sonar images On the one hand, by computing the SNR, PSNR, MSE of the images denoised by the four models respectively, and memorizing the run-time of the four models to compare the property of the four models; On the other hand, in order to evaluate the property of maintaining the target edge in the algorithms, the original image, noise image, and the images denoised by the four models were segmented by the region-based segmentation algorithm. the conclusion comes that LS model and ROF model are more suitable for sonar image denoising, however, in ipractical application, the compromise appropriate denoising model should be looked for according to specific task.
