Terahertz is an interdisciplinary between electronics and photonics due to its special place between IR and microwave.Terahertz technology involves many kinds of disciplines such as the electromagnetism,optoelectronics,semiconductor physics,materials science,and microprocessing technology.There are some special properties about terahertz region compared with IR and microwave,such as perspectivity,safety,spectral-resolved etc.So terahertz has important research value in image,environmental monitoring,medical diagnosis etc.In recent years,terahertz technology developed rapidly,and the requirement for versatile terahertz functional devices also gradually increased.However,the study of terahertz functional devices develops slowly due to terahertz theory is still not mature enough and it is difficult in machining.Surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)are electromagnetic waves propagating along metal-dielectric interface when EM wave incident to the interface of metal and dielectric,free electrons on the surface of the metal appear collective oscillation,and the EM wave with the free electrons coupling.SPPs decay exponentially in the transverse direction and the field amplitude on the surface has maximum.Surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)can confine electromagnetic wave propagating in subwavelength.But SPPs cannot be confined in smooth metal surface tightly,researchers found the confinement of electromagnetic wave was greatly enhanced while there exist periodic grooves in smooth metal,and have proposed many kinds of structures to support the propagating of SPPs efficiently,these results make component research based on SPPs become more widely and deeply.In terahertz region,SPPs has two important properties.First,compared with the optical frequencies,SPPs in THz have much longer propagation length so it is more controllable.Second,compared with the microwave frequencies,the size of THz SPPs components is smaller and is more suit for integration.Therefore,terahertz functional devices based on SPPs has become one of the hotspots in the field of terahertz.In this paper,the mechanism of electromagnetic wave transmission based on surface plasmon polaritons and the mechanism of realizing low loss terahertz transmission are studied in order to obtain the filter suitable for terahertz device integration and chip application.For the purpose of surface plasmon polaritons,the terahertz filter with subwavelength structure is studied.In the end,a terahertz ultra-wideband low-pass filter with a more compact structure,a lower power loss with a cutoff frequency of 0.54 THz and a terahertz ultra-wideband band-pass filter with a center frequency of 0.44 THz and a cutoff frequency of 0.59 THz are proposed.And experiment is carried out on the bandpass filter.
