Distributed virtual environment allows multiple users scattered in different geographic locations to share information and cooperate with each other in a realistic three-dimensional space. In recent years, the distributed virtual environment has been widely studied and applied in many areas such as the military, simulation, industry, entertainment, medical and education. With the continuous expansion of application scale of distributed virtual environment, facing with limited network and computing resources, improving the scalability of system becomes an urgent problem. At present, this problem has become a hot research topic in the field of distributed virtual environment. Interest management as a commonly used data filtering technology, can improve the scalability of distributed virtual environment. However, existing interest management methods have many problems, cannot describe the user's demands of awareness accurately, and there is still a large room for data filtering. In order to improve the scalability of distributed virtual environment, specific studies of this paper are as follows:First of all, according to the disadvantages of traditional interest management methods in the environmental factors and user interaction, such as cannot accurately express the user's interest, and granularity of data filtering is relatively large, this paper considers the influence on the user's interest of several factors in objective awareness and subjective interest, and proposes a hierarchical interest management model based on multiple factors. The model uses a double-layer calculation method to calculate the degree of interest, divides the level of interest according to the degree of interest, and controls the details of data transmission according to the level of interest. This paper focuses on the space division method based on obstacles, and calculates the area of interest according to the obstacle factor. At the same time, on the basis of distance, vision and critical area, this paper further considers the influence of movement factor on user's awareness. Then, this paper studies the user's subjective interest based on group activities, analyses group activities starting with activity theory and group awareness theory, and founds the user's role is the key factor to reflect his subjective interest. On the basis of the awareness model based on roles, this paper studies the roles' interest relationship in group activities, analyzes the effect of spatial distance to the user's subjective interest, and puts forward the concept of role-interest graph. The construction process of the role-interest graph and activity management process are introduced in detail. The calculation method of the subjective interest between users is presented at the end. Finally, combined with the proposed model, this paper designs and implements a virtual tourism simulation system. According to the data filtering effect and the algorithm efficiency of the model, some comparison tests are carried out. The experimental results show that compared to the traditional methods, the model can further reduce the network overhead of the system, and the efficiency of the algorithm is stable, thus the effectiveness of the model is verified.
